According to the 2016 census, Punjabi is one of the fastest-growing languages in Australia, representing a five-fold growth in 10 years. There is a Punjabi stationed successfully in roughly every sector of the economy. The Sydney Chapter of PCC will connect all Punjabis together as a family so that it helps each other grow even while contributing to the economy and society of Sydney. The Punjabis were the first South Asians to reach North America (the ports of Vancouver and San Francisco) in the early twentieth century. Majority of them were rural Sikhs and many were ex-soldiers. A few among them were carpenters, weavers and some were even mechanics. They had come to earn money and return home. But as the circumstances unfolded, many decided to stay back and evolved a new life. Fast forward to the last decade or so, Silicon Valley has attracted ambitious and highly educated professionals from across the subcontinent. The Philadelphia metro area is a large area that covers not only the City of Philadelphia and neighboring counties in Pennsylvania, but South Jersey and Delaware as well. The majority of the Punjabis in Mumbai come from the North West Frontier Province, now part of Pakistan. Most refugees began earning their livelihood by opening restaurants, getting a foothold in the city’s cloth trade, or automobile business. Some flamboyant Punjabis ended up in Bollywood. Now the 4th generation descendants of refugees from the former NWFP and Punjab grow up in the city they call home.
